Video: Jo Cox charity single released tomorrow

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder in their bright blue school jumpers, the youngsters from Norristhorpe Junior and Infant School had brought along white roses to throw as the funeral cortege passed by this morning.

The children, who are members of the school choir, had performed for Mrs Cox after she heard about them being invited to sing at the Albert Hall.

Headteacher Claire Lyles said: “She said she would like to meet them and congratulate them. We had a special assembly for her and the choir sang for her. She really enjoyed it and wrote to the children to thank them.

“She really inspired the whole school community.”

The choir were asked to sing in Batley when an event to mark what would have been Mrs Cox’s 42nd birthday was held on June 22.

And they are among the local singers who joined Batley Community Choir to record charity single ‘The Rose’.

Mrs Lyles said: “The choir performed on the single so we though it would be nice to bring some of the children along today as a mark of respect.”

On the morning after the MP’s death, Batley Community Choir sang ‘The Rose’ on Channel 4’s The Last Leg programme, which was broadcast live from Batley Parish Church.

It was then suggested that they record the song to raise money for the Jo Cox Fund, which supports charities that were close to her heart.

Members of the community were invited to join the Batley choir in singing the final verse at a recording session held in Batley Town Hall on July 3.
