Wakefield Wheeled Cats unveil new uniform at bout in Dewsbury

Wakey Wheeled Cats, who are based at Lightwaves Leisure Centre, take on Sheffield Crucibelles at Dewsbury Sports Centre.

And they’re looking forward to debuting their new uniform, which feature the Cats’ logo, designed by Wakefield-based streetwear firm Riot Not Diet.

It’s taken the best part of a year to get the design perfected, with the whole league involved, and comes just after we celebrated our fifth anniversary in April.

The tops also include the logos of the team’s sporting partners, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and the Wakefield Community Trust.

Cats’ captain Kirsty Quinn said: “The new uniforms have been a long time coming and add a real boost of confidence to the team.

“We’ve just celebrated our fifth anniversary, and as we’re taking a more serious approach to training, it felt right to take a more modern approach to the branding of the team and our uniform.

“When we started the league, the image of roller derby was still quite punk and D-I-Y. However, we have always had a more sporty image and wanted that to come across in our new design,

“The image of roller derby has changed dramatically since it started in the UK, with a much more professional, athletic image. Our modernised look reflects both the modern game, and the current Cats’ team, which is focused, hard-working and ready to take on our next opponents on Saturday.”

It’s the second time the teams have met on track, with the Crucibelles taking the win in a closed game in Sheffield last autumn. But the Cats are eager come out on top, boosted by May’s 226-74 win against Barnsley Black Heart Rollers.

Miss Quinn said: “It was a convincing win that improved our European rankings by 50 points - but Sheffield are an experienced team and they showed us that last time we met on track.

“We’ve been training hard and are looking to build on a successful start to our playing season.

“Having the home crowd on our side was a real boost last month, and we’re hoping that as many people will come to support us again next week.”
