Warning over robberies by people asking for change

Police are warning people in Batley and Dewsbury of a robbery series in which individuals have stolen personal items from victims while distracting them by asking for change for a £2 coin.

Four men have been arrested in connection with a series of offences committed between January and April 2016, predominantly in Dewsbury and Batley and involving elderly victims.

They have been interviewed and released on bail.

Detective Constable Victoria Catania, of Kirklees District CID, said: “We are investigating nearly 30 similar offences at this time but believe there may be other victims who have not come forward; possibly up until now not realising that they have been a victim of crime. We are keen to speak to anyone who has been asked to provide change and later found that personal items such as jewellery, watches, wallets or purses are missing.”

Incidents can be reported either by calling 101 or online via the following link: www.westyorkshire.police.uk/reportcrime. Crimes in progress should always be reported via 999.
