The Alternative Market concept has won a national award

The Kirklees Alternative Market has been named the Best Small Specialist Market by the National Association of British Market Authorities.

The project supports those aged 13-29 with a business idea to develop their own retail space and allows them to establish their brand before moving into permanent markets or high street units.

The market, described as a ‘stand-out application’, was praised by government minister for high streets and markets Marcus Jones at a presentation ceremony in Birmingham.

The pop-up format ran 26 times last year in locations across the district and has strong links with local schools and colleges.

“It takes the teenage market concept forward to the next level providing a market of young entrepreneurs that is a beacon example that many may wish to follow,” the Association stated.

Stalls feature products such as recycled jewellery and food and drink, and also include a performance area for young artists to sing and play in front of an audience.
