Boxer Gary Sykes gets Vegas world title shot against Adrien Broner

Gary Sykes is to fight for the WBO world super featherweight title next month in Las Vegas.

The Dewsbury boxer will face champion Adrien Broner at The Mandalay Bay Hotel on Saturday May 19.

The 28-year-old described the chance as ‘a dream come true’.

SOCIAL networking websites Twitter and Facebook were inundated with comments and good luck messages after news of Sykes’ world title bid broke.

Within minutes if updating his Facebook page, Sykes had received in excess of 25 messages from well wishers.

Sykes himself posted: “This little blonde haired boy from Dewsbury Moor is boxing in Vegas for the WBO World title.”

Trainer Julian McGowan, tweeted: “@centralboxing was a carnival tonight (Wednesday). Best ever night in gym thanks to Steve Wood, he delivered!!”

Among the comments from well wishers came one from Gallagher’s Gym in Manchester, who posted: “Brilliant news for Gary Sykes, made up for him and his team. Chance of a lifetime, living the dream.”

Jake Milo, who helps with Gary’s training and nutrition at the Central club added: “It’s the real rocky story”.

Fans are already looking forward to the big night.

James McNicholas said: “May 19 just keeps getting better. Khan-Peterson, Price-Sexton and Sykes-Broner.”

Wakko100 added: “Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England will be buzzing.”

Interviews with Sykes and McGowan are due to be screened on Sky’s boxing magazine show Ringside tonight (Thursday) at 6pm, with repeats during the weekend.
