Dewsbury’s Akbar earns number one seed for Elite Championships

Akbar had a great run in the national elite boxing tournament last year, beating five opponents to reach the finals of the most prestigious event in the amateur calendar.

Akbar was one of only two 18 year olds to reach the finals of the tournament, overcoming much older and more experienced fighters on the way.

Akbar boxed a very experienced opponent in the final, only to lose out on a points decision.

His achievements of 2019 have been recognised with the number one seeding for this year’s tournament and he is proud to be representing his home town of Dewsbury at the top level of amateur boxing in England.

Akbar was excited about his prospects of capturing the title but due to the Coronavirus epidemic, the tournament has been postponed until later in the year.

While training out of the Warrior Breed Boxing Club in Dewsbury, Amaar also works on projects helping with community groups, while encouraging youths against gangs and knife crime.

Akbar has dedicated his life to the sport with the former Mirfield Free Grammar School student going on to study a Level Three sports qualification from Bradford College.

He has a hectic schedule which can see him train up to three times a day five or six days a week, which includes training and sparring with English, British and a former world champion.

Amaar has been a regular sparring partner with Huddersfield’s former British super lightweight champion Tyrone Nurse and English super lightweight title challenger Bilal Rehman.

Akbar was also asked to help out sparring with David Avanesyan, a former WBA interim World Champion and current European welterweight champion, who was preparing for a bout with Sunderland’s Josh Kelly before the outbreak.

Akbar was honoured to spar one of the best in the world and has high hopes in his own career, with his main ambition to try and qualify for the Great Britain set up, which he hopes will eventually lead to Olympic Games qualification.
