Derby clash opens CYL Premier campaign

Batley mark their return to the Central Yorkshire League’s top flight with a cracking opening day derby at Birstall on Saturday.

Batley have made a host of notable signings following promotion last term, with Muhammed Shahnawaz switching from Mirfield Parish Cavaliers.

Uzair Majid returns to the club following a spell at Parish, Sufyan Patel joins from Hopton Mills, while Roheil Hussain and Saquib Talib return to the Mount Pleasant outfit from Wrenthorpe.

Birstall have signed two players who helped Hanging Heaton Seconds retain the Priestley Shield last season.

Spinner Umar Rehman makes the step up having won the Bradford League second teams bowling averages last year and is joined by all-rounder Waz Nazir.

Mirfield Parish face a cracking opening fixture at home to Townville before hosting Bradford League giants Woodlands in the Heavy Woollen, which sees Birstall travel to Townville.

Liversedge will be aiming to have a serious tilt at promotion from the Championship and start at home to Northowram, while Hopton Mills will also be contenders for a return to the Premier Division and they travel to Caribbean.

Liversedge also face a tough test in the Heavy Woollen Cup first round when they travel to Huddersfield League side Kirkburton.

It will be a historic day for Birstall outfit Crossbank Methodists, who have strived hard to be accepted into the Central Yorkshire.

Crossbank opened a new clubhouse over Easter and have employed the services of an Australian overseas player Joshua Martin as they signal their intentions to climb the divisions.

They begin with a trip to East Leeds in Division Two.

Moorlands won promotion to the Drakes Huddersfield Premiership last season and kick off with a trip to Kirkburton before hosting New Farnley in what should be an intriguing Heavy Woollen Cup clash.
