Hopton hosts exciting grasstrack meeting

Malcolm and Shirley Stead, who formed the Yorkshire Junior Grasstrack Club in 1979, were on hand to witness their 9-year-old grandson Sam take the honours in the MX65 class. Sam is the latest in the Stead motorcycling dynasty along with 11-year-old cousin Jack, their fathers, Ian and Paul respectively, had successful speedway careers.

Although the threat of rain was never far away the public turned out in large numbers and were treated to five hours of thrilling racing with over 50 races. The event was the fourth round of the club championship with riders travelling from Cumbria and Oxfordshire to take part. The action took place on a 500 metre oval track with riders divided in classes from six-years-old on automatic 50cc bikes to the adults 500cc bikes.

Racing was fast and furious. Unfortunately 10-year-old Tom Brennan, who had already recorded three race wins, took a nasty fall. He was checked over by the medics and had no lasting injury.

There was successes for several local riders with Josh Birkett (Mirfield), Jack Parkinson-Blackburn (Ossett) and Jolyon West (Cleckheaton) winning their respective classes.

Andrew Whittaker (Dewsbury), Harry McGurk and Jayden Wright, both Cleckheaton, all finished in rostrum positions.

The day proved a resounding success with local businesses also benefitting. Grasstrack action returns to Liley Lane on Sunday, September 11.
