Mirfield club set to leave CYL

MOORLANDS will leave the Central Yorkshire League (CYL) at the end of this season having been accepted to a new third tier of the Huddersfield League.

The Memorial Park side were looking to mount a promotion challenge and had climbed to second, four points behind Ossett going in to tomorrow’s home game with East Ardsley.

But on Wednesday evening, news broke that Moorlands have been accepted to an expanded Huddersfield League, thus ending a 15-year association with the CYL.

The Huddersfield League hope to increase from 30 to 38 clubs, with two divisions of 12 and a third tier of 14 teams.

Moorlands previously played in the Huddersfield Central League from 1987 to 1998, when they joined the CYL and they have been in the first division since 2002, finishing third on three occasions.

Huddersfield Central clubs Denby, Almondbury Wesleyans and Denby Dale have also been accepted to the Huddersfield League for next season.

Moorlands’ departure could open the door for the third placed club in Division One to be promotion and this could help Mirfield rivals Hopton Mills.

Hopton are having a terrific season and are third, eight points adrift of leaders Ossett and they face a crucial game at fourth-placed Wakefield St Michaels tomorrow.
