Championship's central funding should be split evenly between clubs for 2021, believes Dewsbury Rams head coach Lee Greenwood

DEWSBURY RAMS head coach Lee Greenwood believes that the central distribution money in the Betfred Championship should be split evenly next season.

In normal circumstances, the funding is allocated depending where a team finishes in the league table.

However, with the Championship campaign cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic last week, Greenwood strongly feels the money should be shared evenly across the second tier for 2021.

“The big thing in the Championship is the distribution money, it is laddered from first to 14th on what money you get,” Greenwood said.

“That is the big decision that needs to be made and a meeting that needs to be had quite quickly.

“I would find it highly unfair and not quite right if it goes on last year’s finishing positions.

“You would basically be getting rewarded or punished for two years. I would find that not quite right.”

The Rams had started the season in fine form, winning three of their four league matches, including a win at Halifax and victory over Widnes Vikings.

Dewsbury were locked in a relegation battle for much of last season but after some smart recruitment looked set to be challenging at the other end of the table in 2020.

And Greenwood believes his side would be unfairly punished if the funds were distributed on 2019’s finishing places.

The Rams boss also reckons that splitting the money evenly will provide a more competitive league in 2021.

“I am not just saying it because of where we were. There was never going to be relegation once what happened with the season happened,” he added.

“I just don’t see why you should be punished or rewarded for two years, I think it should be shared out more evenly for this year.

“It would allow all clubs to prosper a little bit more. The pandemic has hit everyone the same. It is a meeting that needs to be had and a decision that needed to be made quicker than whether or not the season should be continued.

“I am not sure if the distribution money stays the same how comfortable I will be with it.”

Meanwhile, Rams chairman Mark Sawyer is delighted to renew the club’s dual registration partnership with Hull Kingston Rovers.

He said: “They were very accommodating in setting up the agreement and in agreeing to a pre-season friendly, which will hopefully prove to be a massive boost to us as an important part of the preparations for next season. They have a good squad of players with good attitudes instilled in to them by a quality coach.”
