Quality field expected for memorial trophy

A quality field of bowlers are expected at Hanging Heaton this Saturday when the David Lamb Memorial Invitation 16 takes place.

David worked tirelessly at Hanging Heaton and his former club Batley Taverners and the tournament takes place in his memory.

The Invitation takes place on a green just seven years old and will test 16 of the top crown green bowlers from the north of England.

They are led by Yorkshire County captain Graeme Wilson, who helped Lower Hopton win the West Riding Cup last Friday, and All England champion Ashley Daykin, from Huddersfield.

Tie of the first round sees five-times Blackpool Waterloo winner Gary Ellis facing six time junior Waterloo winner Wayne Ditchfield. A first prize of £500 awaits the winner and bowling starts at 5pm.

Lower Hopton were crowned West Yorkshire bowls champions following a thrilling 209-207 victory over Pudsey BC A at Spen Victoria last Friday.

Clayton Victoria defeated Shipley Club 234-184 in the Pilling Cup final last Friday.

Graeme Wilson captains the Yorkshire County team in their first Crossfield Cup game of the season against the Potteries on Sunday. The home leg is being played at Meltham BC and the away leg at Florence BC. Ashley Daykin, who plays for Netherton in the Mirfield League, makes his 100th appearance for Yorkshire.
