It was the second Super League scalp Dewsbury have claimed during pre-season, following an equally impressive success over Bradford Bulls.

Castleford included a number of first team regulars coupled with players returning from injury and some of their young hopefuls but it was Dewsbury who mastered the dreadful conditions better.

Joel Farrell had a terrific game for the Rams, both in attack and defence, and was on hand to score Dewsbury’s first try.

Anthony Thackeray was at the hub of Dewsbury’s best moves and he has formed a great partnership with fellow half-back Tom Hemingway.

The Tigers twice knocked on close to their own line in the opening three minutes, an early indication of how difficult handling was in the muddy conditions.

Dewsbury struck first when excellent forwards play took them close and Farrell spotted a gap to burrow over from acting half-back, with Hemingway converting.

A superb piece of Rams play saw full-back Louis Sheriff shepherd the ball dead for a tap on the 25.

Sheriff ran the ball out, took a quick tap, and launched the ball downfield.

Dewsbury won the race and hacked the ball on and with the Tigers defence open Hemingway kicked ahead but too hard as the ball rolled dead at the other end to Castleford’s relief.

Dewsbury were having the better of the play and after Ryan Wright knocked on in a good position, he made amends soon after by slipping a lovely short pass to send Tommy Gallagher crashing over at the side of the posts, with Hemingway converting.

Substitute Keiran Hyde made a terrific break to split the Tigers defence midway through the second half but his pass went to ground.

Dewsbury sealed victory with a third try nine minutes from time as Thackeray broke through and drew the defence to send supporting Scott Hale racing to the posts. Jordan Grayston converting to cap an excellent Rams victory.
