Morrison aims to end hoodoo in first game

The Rams welcome Sheffield Eagles to Tetley’s Stadium a week tonight (8pm) as the eagerly anticipated new Kingstone Press Championship campaign kicks off.

Morrison has never beaten the Eagles but is determined his side will end that hoodoo and begin the campaign in style.

Morrison joked: “Friday 13th is my lucky day, so hopefully that’s an omen for us to beat them.”

He added: “It was good to get a win against London but we have to back that up against Sheffield or pre-season doesn’t mean anything.

“We just want to do the best we can with the players and personnel we have. We know ourselves that if we perform well and to our ability, we can compete with anybody.

“We showed last season and again in pre-season that if we are up for it, we are going to give ourselves a chance of winning.”

The Rams go into the season opener in good shape having recorded friendly victories over London and Salford.

Morrison has recruited well in the off-season and there is optimism among Rams supporters that they can be a force.

Speaking after last week’s 34-6 victory over the Broncos, Morrison added: “We brought Matty (Wildie) in to give us an option and I thought both he and Thacks (Anthony Thackeray) had good shape and we scored some good tries.

“Hopefully the fans were happy with that and we want to take the momentum and confidence throughout the competition.”

Wayne Godwin required stitches in a head injury and also dislocated a finger against London but is hoping to be fit to face the Eagles.
