Rams boost play-off hopes with hard-fought away win

Dewsbury were made to work hard for the win, which leaves them fifth in the table and with a favourable run-in, a top eight finish lies within the Rams own hands.

The Crusaders needed the points in their quest to avoid relegation and proved tough opponents but it was the Rams who started the brighter and struck first.

Full-back Louis Sheriff was recalled from a loan spell at Gateshead recently and the full-back nipped over to the right of the posts, with Tom Hemingway converting.

Dewsbury continued to press and a high kick was gathered by Sam Wood to score his second try in as many appearances.

Although Hemingway was unable to convert, the visitors were good value for their 10-0 lead.

Crusaders responded as hooker Lee Hudson replied with a try, which Tommy Johnson improved and worse was to follow for the Rams when Karl Pryce limped off having taken a knock.

Toby Adamson grabbed a second North Wales try, Johnson edged his side ahead with the conversion and then hammered over a long range penalty as the Crusaders led 14-10 at half-time.

Pryce returned from injury and made an immediate impact cutting inside and going over for an important try. Hemingway tagged on the goal and Dewsbury led 16-14.

Fans favourite Makali Aizue looked to have made the game safe when he powered his way to the line to score at the right of the posts, with Hemingway’s third goal giving the Rams an eight-point cushion.

Dewsbury improved their defence and looked to be keeping the Crusaders at bay for the second half until a flowing passing move ended with Rob Massam crossing for an unconverted try four minutes from time.

There were a few anxious moments for the Dewsbury travelling support but they need not have worried as the Rams defence held out to register a crucial three points in their quest for a play-off spot
