Sedge progress in County Cup

LIVERSEDGE edged into the second round of the West Riding County Cup on Tuesday with a hard-fought victory over Yorkshire Amateurs.

The win sets up a last 16 clash on November 29 at Garforth Town, who overcame Silsden 3-2.

Liversedge made several changes to give fringe players a run-out, while stand-in manager Lee Ashforth will claim it was his inspired second half substitution which played a major part in the win.

Ashforth introduced Carl Horsman for Alex Hallam in the 58th minute and the substitute scored the only goal of the game with his first touch.

Joe Jagger played a short corner to Samuel Mir and he sent over a teasing far post cross which Horsman got on the end of to head home.

Liversedge almost doubled their advantage in the closing stages when the two other substitutes combined. Nathan Cartman played a lovely ball across the face of goal and although Dave Bordman managed to get on the end of it the goalkeeper and a defender bundled it off the line.

Danny Knight was handed a rare start in goal and he did well to make a diving save at the foot of a post from the home side’s first real chance after half an hour.

Liversedge’s best chance of the first half came in the 37th minute when Hallam sent Jagger through and he crashed a shot against the underside of the crossbar but unfortunately it bounced out.

James Hurtley shot just over at the end of a goalless first half before super-sub Horsman won it for Liversedge with his 62nd minute goal.
