Spen AC rake in points at West Yorkshire League

There were three first-place finishes from Spen competitors at the event held at Wakefield Harriers on Wednesday, June 12, as nine members of the club took part across a range of events and age groups.

Leon Greenwood continued his ascent of the under 17s league leaderboard with victory in the under 17 men’s 200m final.

After storming home in first place in his heat, Leon won the final by more than half a second.

He then came fifth in the U17 men’s 100m hurdles behind teammate Glenn Aspindle to get his hands on another two points.

Aspindle took third in the hurdles before finishing sixth in the 800m and seventh in the discus, moving up to tenth in the overall rankings.

Matthew Crorken was also a winner for Spen, finishing first in the under 13 boys’ 800m.

Matthew won his heat and ran a time of 2mins 20.96secs to see off Wakefield’s Max Rose in the final.

Curtis Dransfield was the final Spen athlete in the men’s competition, finishing in fifth place in the under 17 discus with a throw of 23.18m.

In the women’s competition, Keavey Ward was the star performer, taking a total of 13 points to retain her place at the top of the under 17 league.

Keavey won the girls’ 80m in 14.52secs, before finishing fourth in both the 200m and shot put.

She was an agonizing 0.04 seconds behind third-placed Sophie Gilbert (Pontefract) in the 800m final, but recovered to throw 6.17m in the shot, an event dominated by the Wakefield pair of Alyce McCurdie and Jessica Eyles.

Keavey now leads Eyles by three points in the individual points standings with a total of 41.

Megan Mallison took fifth in the under 15 girls’ shot put and 13th in the 200m at her first event of the season, while teammate Rachel Crorken was eighth in both the shot and 200m.

Georgia Smith-Calvert was also in action, taking a respectable 14th place in the shot put and finishing 19th in the 800m with a time of 2mins 57.11secs, having come ninth in her heat.

The final Spen representative was Alice Cooper, who managed 15th in the under 13 girls’ 80m.

Alice came through her heat in fourth place to qualify for the final, but faced stiff competition as she came home in 12.89secs.
