Spen remain on track for promotion

Spen built on their opening day win in May to open up a five-point lead at the top of Division Four with five more meetings to go.

Sasha Craig led the way with four wins, while it was a day to remember for the male throwers, who bagged victory in no fewer than six events.

After the disappointment of relegation last term, Spen have wasted no time in their pursuit of immediate promotion back to Division Three.

After topping the scoreboards with 434.5 to take the eight points at the season opener in Manchester last month, the team were dominant again in Leeds, scoring 414 points en route to another maximum score.

Craig, who bagged a sprint double at the last match, did it again on Sunday as she took glory in the 100m and 200m.

She then helped her team to victory in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays in another stunning display.

The male throwers were also in ominous form, Toby Aspindle winning the javelin A event for the second match running, while teammate James Anthony repeated the feat in the B contest.

Elliot Griffin and Toby Aspindle won the discus A and B respectively, while Griffin also took victory in the hammer A, with David Giblin triumphant in the hammer B.

There were further wins for Emma Rawnsley in the javelin and Chelsea Mitchell, who was victorious once again in the shot put.

The result leaves Spen in a comfortable position in the league, leading the pack with 16 points, five clear of the chasing trio of Halifax, Horwich and Altrincham.

The club are also on the lookout for new members to join their team.

A four-week introductory training programme is to be held at Princess Mary Playing Fields, Cleckheaton, starting on Monday, June 24 and taking place each Monday and Thursday night.
