Love of Bhangra unites cities around the globe for unique event

Audiences at Huddersfield Town Hall will be part of an international event to celebrate Bhangra music and dance.

Local performers and global stars have pledged their support for World Bhangra Day on Saturday.

During the event, live links will be used to share performances from around the world.

Cities taking part include Madrid, Mumbai, Singapore, Brisbane, Vancouver, Mexico City and New York – and Huddersfield.

The main attraction will be Malkit Singh MBE, who is billed as the world’s most successful Bhangra performer and singer. Singh is the biggest selling artist in genre’s history, with 21 albums and tours in 36 countries under his belt.

Bhangra Band DCS singer and Britain’s Got Bhangra star Shin will also be appearing.

The celebration kicks off with a performance showing the evolution of Bhangra from its rural roots in Panjab to its current form.

There will also be a live dance performance involving young people from schools and colleges across the region, including Kirklees College and University of Huddersfield. It is the brainchild of VIRSA, a community project which won £30,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for its Bhangra Renaissance project.

Tickets priced £5-£15 are available at or from Kirklees booking offices on 01484 223200, 01924 324501 or 01484 222444.
